Defunct Airline Part 3: Malév Hungarian Airlines

Welcome to my blog post on Malev Hungarian Airlines!

Introduction

Malev Hungarian Airlines was a former Oneworld alliance member and the national carrier of Hungary. Unfortunately, due to the financial crisis, the airline had no choice but to cease operation in February 2012. It was a sad day for Eastern Europe Aviation and this airline would always be in my mind. I have seen the aircraft myself flying into Amsterdam and London Heathrow. Here is a photo of mine, taken in Amsterdam.

How did this airline come about?

This airline used to be one of the oldest airlines in the world, set up in 1946 just after world war 2 ended. Originally it began as Maszovlet which comprised of merged companies such as Malert, Maefort and Hungarian part of Aeroflot. In 1954, Hungary acquired the Soviet shares of this company and it was renamed to Malev Hungarian Airlines. This airline operated Russian built jets such as TU-134 and TU-154 until 1989. It was at that period, politics had changed with democracy being introduced. Western aircraft were acquired and Malev ordered aircraft from Boeing and Bombardier.

The airline had its golden days in the 2000s, joining the Oneworld Alliance instead of Skyteam (Czech Airlines offered to sponsor the airline's entry). Numerous changes took place at the board room before the airline got renationalised with MNV taking control with a 95% stake in this company. Unfortunately, the European Commission investigated the illegal Government subsidies of Malev in 2010 and 2 years later, the commission found the company guilty and ordered it to return the money given by the government. This was a big blow to the airline and since the amount was too much for the airline to cough out, it had no choice but to cease operation, especially after the aircraft leasing companies, seized the fleet of aircraft.

Hope you enjoy this short report on this Hungarian airline.

Cheers,
Charles

  1. If you're booking online usually there are numerous very good sites you can use to book hotels and if you can stay outside of the main cities yet again the deals can be more suitable. If you're booking a vacation that involves linking flights, it's always better to find thebest cheap airline ticket websites of the airline's that will be carrying you to the end desired destination.
